BRINGING "THE BLUES" TO FAIR HAVEN K8 4TH GRADERS
A true collaborative project is underway at Fair Haven K8. Fourth grade teachers, the literacy coach, the library media specialist and the music teacher have been working together on a unit where students will have the opportunity to conduct research to build and present knowledge on the fascinating topic of Blues music!
The project will begin on October 1st, 2012 with a multimedia extravaganza in the Library Media Center (LMC). Each of the 4 fourth grade classes will come to the LMC and circulate through stations in small groups. The stations will include:
After all students have experienced each station, they will respond in writing to the questions above, which will be displayed on a banner created by the art teachers. Students will experience a gallery walk in their classrooms and be introduced to 10 selected Blues musicians and their music. They will rank their interests and then be placed into small research groups within each class. Within the classrooms, students will read narrative biographies and be taught how to identify what a "significant life event" is, as well as note taking skills. |
Research will take place in the LMC with students using a wealth of resources from vetted websites, to books at all reading levels, to watching videos and listening to interviews with their selected musician.
Students will immerse themselves in reading and learning and utilize The Big 6 Information Problem Solving Model. Once all research has been completed, students will create a banner with 10 squares with 1 image and several sentences describing the various significant life events that contributed to the evolution of their Blues musician. Student groups will also write their own Blues song which will be recorded on an iPad using the Garage Band app. |
